PMBA Students Travel to Beijing, China

Dr. James Johnson and 12 PMBA students recently returned from Beijing, China, after spending a week there with PMBA students as part of the INTL 606 -- Business in Emerging Markets course. The week in China helped the students understand the complexities, the opportunities, and the frustrations of doing business in emerging markets.

The students visited the offices of Ogilvy & Mather (advertising), Google, the American Chamber of Commerce, and the Quality Brands Protection Committee (a consortium of multinationals seeking to increase intellectual property protection rights), and had briefings from the Economic and Political sections of the US Embassy and from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition, the students visited major cultural sites in Beijing, such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall. The students also gathered data for their team research papers on different aspects of doing business in China.

The arrangements in Beijing were organized by Educasian, which has worked with Rollins previously in Shanghai. The hotel was well situated in the center of the city, with well-appointed double rooms for the students, and all visits were made easier by the provision of a minibus and driver. The group had its own dedicated guide for the week: Peter Jacobsen, a Danish national who has lived and worked in China for 14 years. Peter’s caustic humor, fluent Chinese, and knowledge of the culture made the trip unforgettable experience for Dr. Johnson and the students.

Dr. Johnson stated that this was one of the best travel courses he has led in 8 years at Crummer, and much of this was due to the attitude of the students themselves: Andrea Batres, Melissa Collins, Melissa Dubois, Alessandro Garabaghi, Taylor Kennedy, Oscar Leon, CJ Maier, Carlos Mendez, Kathy Savon, Rachel Sutherland, Ina Toderita, and Alexandra Tuttle.

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 23, 2009—The Rollins MBA at the Crummer Graduate School of Business announces that it is ranked first in Florida and 22nd in the nation by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review as part of their annual ranking of the top 25 graduate schools for entrepreneurial studies. The Rollins MBA moved up two spaces from its ranking of 24th in the nation in 2008, and was chosen from more than 2,300 programs surveyed by The Princeton Review, of which 25 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs are ranked.

Summer Commencement at Knowles Memorial Chapel

We have been very fortunate to acquire the use of the Knowles Memorial Chapel for our Summer 2009 commencement exercises. We have in the past been asked by graduates if this might be a possibility due to the smaller number of graduates marching in the summer commencement. There is no change to the date or starting time of the event, but please note that we are moving the actual event from the larger Harold & Ted Alfond Sports Center to the Knowles Memorial Chapel.

This change in venue will require us to use tickets for the guest of our graduates. Each graduate can order up to six tickets and request additional tickets that might be available at a later date. Graduates are asked to only order the exact number of tickets they need to ensure that all of our guest can be accommodated.

Rollins College to Host ALPFA Members Forum Discussion

4th Annual Night Golf Tournament a Success!

On Friday, February 27, over 60 Crummer students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends took to the links in the dark at Dubsdread Golf Course for our 4th Annual Night Golf Tournament sponsored by the PMBA Association. The event sold out once again and was a rousing success for all involved. Many golf balls were lost, much food and drink was consumed, and a good time was had by all. Thanks go out to Nate Morris and Monica McKendrick for all their hard work in organizing the event. Thanks as well to Dubsdread for their work in preparing the course. The PMBA Association looks forward to continuing this annual tradition once again in 2010.
